Conducting an interview with an new student who is coming from another teacher? Here’s 18 questions that can help you to get to know them as a player and set the scene for future lesson success.

  2. Who have you been learning from?
  3. Why are you looking for a new teacher?
  4. Does your old teacher know you are looking for someone new?
  5. Is there something in particular you would like to work on?
  6. What do you enjoy playing?
  7. What would you like to do with the harp?
  8. How much practice do you do each week?
  9. What is your technical background? (e.g. Salzedo/Grandjany/French/Russian)
  10. What music books do you have?
  11. Can you commit to regular lessons?
  12. Do you ever get to play with other musicians?
  13. How much music theory and history do you know?
  14. Have you ever sat an exam?
  15. Would you like to sit an exam?
  16. Have you ever tried writing your own music?
  17. Do you like playing classical/folk/pop/jazz?
  18. Are you comfortable performing at student concerts?
